I have come across a few tutorials on pinterest lately that have been suggesting making your own altered designed mugs by using a Sharpie! I kept thinking, “God, I WISH it were that easy!” My cups take 3-4 days to complete and have multiple steps to get to a finish that I like. I decided to try it out and followed the steps I have been seeing on blogs. Cup, Sharpie, Design, Bake at 350 for 30 mins and allow to cool. After the mug had been sitting for a few hours I decided to try washing it with warm water, regular dish soap and a sponge– just as I thought, the design immediately deteriorated. Below are the first wash, the second pass under the faucet and sponge and the third. It took a total of 2 minutes to wash the writing almost completely off. I guess it was too good to be true.

This does work with a sharpie – but not the one at home in everyone’s drawer. You can do it with an oil-based paint pen that Sharpie also makes. Or with any ceramic or porcelain paint pens sold in stores.
Oh, I am aware of that. Its what I use in my shop and in the other posts of cups with permanent script
However, my point was– all the posts claiming this could be achieved with a regular sharpie are incorrect.
The same thing happened to me! I spent forever designing and it all came off right away!! So sad.
Thank you! Saw this just in time. My kids were starting to decorate the mug I got for their grandpa…I logged into Pinterest to see how long to cook it for and saw your pin! Will head to the craft store tomorrow to get the correct sharpie!
I tried this too and it did NOT work
Felt terrible … My daughter worked so hard on her valentines mugs and her designs washed off almost immediately
